Steam Challenge: Cat Goes Fishing

Game: Cat Goes Fishing
Time Played: 1.1 Hours

Cat Goes Fishing is a game that’s been on my wishlist for a while. I’m a sucker for fishing games, and the cat in this game is a flame point like  my own, so this game had a few things going for it (including cute art). When I saw it on sale this week for under $5, I snagged it and decided to give it a try.

What is It?

Start out on an island with nothing more than a basic rod. Progress into a radar-wielding master fisher-cat scouring the sea for the biggest and baddest fish. Each fish has unique behaviors that you will learn to exploit as you tailor your arsenal of fishing rods to suit your style of play.

So far, this is pretty accurate. The game is pretty much just a cat fishing. It tosses some quests at you which helps you progress and learn about the game mechanics. But most the time, you’ll be casting out that rod to reel in cash and upgrade your gear.

There isn’t bait to purchase (which surprised me), but as you catch small fish, you can use them to bait bigger fish, and even bigger fish. The money you make upgrades your fishing poles and the attachments you put on the poles. As you level, new poles and even boats open up.

There’s many different types of fish to reel in, and many different quests to accomplish. I can certainly see how the game could get casually addicting (in a good way). It didn’t take me too long to get my first boat and upgrade to a higher pole where quests had me fishing for more and more obscure fish.

Overall, the game is very simple in mechanics and style. It feels a lot like a mobile or flash game (and it is) in presentation. Really, though, it’s a fun fishing game with a cute cat, so why does it need to be more complex than that?

I don’t yet have a cool hat for my cat, and I have a lot of things to unlock still, so I’ll probably be tossing my lures out a bit more when I have some down time for fishing fun. 🙂

Here’s a video of the gameplay style (not my video):
