March Gaming Goals in Review

I actually did a pretty great job of meeting all my goals this month, even the ones I doubted I’d meet (Umbrite Relic Stage). I spent most my gaming time between Zelda: BotW and FFXIV, as expected. Now that I’ve gotten further into Zelda, I can make next month’s goal a bit more specific.

Here’s what happened in March!

Nintendo Switch Launch

  • Dive deep in Zelda – Breath of the Wild ✓

Yep, definitely did this. I put in more than 30 hours on this game (which is a lot for me) and have only cleared the first Divine Beast. I still have so, so much more to do in this game!

Final Fantasy XIV

  • Upgrade Dragoon Gear ✓
  • Upgrade Alt Job Gear ✓
  • Finish Umbrite Anima Relic Step✓
  • Level Paladin ✓
  • Earn scrips for Crafter and Gatherer ✓

I’ve upgraded all of my Dragoon gear to 270 using tokens earned through the alliance raids. I really don’t feel the need to keep running them at this point, so I’ve been taking a break from Dun Scaith and company. Aside from the weapon, my Dragoon is sitting pretty for the expansion.

I have been upgrading my alt job gear as well. Most of the Bard pieces are at least 260 — I believe I just need hands and feet (or something), which I plan on earning through Scripture over time. I’ve also been upgrading my Intelligence gear in anticipation of Red Mage, and working on a complete set of 200 gear for my Paladin. I’m just piecing together drops from Expert at this point with no real urgency. I get what I get.

I finally finished the Umbrite Step for the Relic Weapon! For a while, I didn’t think it was going to happen this month. But last weekend, I put my nose to the grindstone and finished it up!

My goal was to simply “level Paladin.” My reality was level Paladin to 60. Being a shy tank, I stayed away from leveling roulettes, and did it mostly through Beast Tribe dailies, hunts, FATEs and a solo PotD. It honestly didn’t take as long as I thought, and encourages me to work on my other jobs, now.

My final goal was to earn scrips for crafters and gatherers. Oh, man, did I ever! Thanks to the new Deliveries, I made 300 out of the 450 cap for crafter red scrips last night. That’s more than I’ve ever done before (I don’t craft weekly for scrips, just don’t have time). The result has been upgrading all kinds of gear, both crafting and gathering, as well as purchasing Master crafting books and saving up for my first Fokelore for gathering.

Between this and the scrips I get from my Squad, it’s been a beautiful thing. I’m really excited to be making progress in this area! I hope Deliveries stick around.

So, how did your month go? Meet any important goals?

FFXIV: Heavensward’s End (No Spoilers), Level 60 Paladin & Fan Art

Last night, I finally completed leveling my Paladin to 60. Seeing that I hit 50 not all that long ago, and I actually got pretty lazy about leveling for a few weeks, that’s not too bad! I could certainly see myself using this route to level other jobs to 60 in the future.

Speaking of which, I’m trying to decide what job to tackle next. I have Ninja, Black Mage and Warrior all sitting in the mid 30s at this moment. I’m probably going to take on Black Mage simply because it shares gear with Summoner and eventually Red Mage, and that’ll allow me to consolidate gear on down the line. Who knows… I might end up liking Black Mage.

For now, my Paladin’s gear is pretty crappy, so I might still do a few hunts to at least get a set of ilvl 200 across the board. I do have a few higher level drops I’ve gathered, but for the most part, there’s a lot to upgrade.

The End of Heavensward

FFXIV dropped patch 3.56, which brought the end of the story for Heavensward. I won’t go into any details that include spoilers today. I’ll talk more about my impressions tomorrow.

ffxiv_03282017_212838

I’ll just say that finishing up this expansion through story reminded me why I’m still playing this game almost four years after I started. I’m not going to hype the story. I felt like it was a solid ending to one story… but more of a beginning to Stormblood than anything else. I enjoyed it, especially the characterization.

I’m also happy I switched back to a kitty for this before the story dropped. There’s just something about the Miqo’te’s  facial expressions that I missed when I switched to Elezen. My kitty has really grown on me in a short time.

In fact, I even sat down and drew my first ever piece of fan work for FFXIV. There’s something about my kitty’s hair that inspires art.

Nefol RPG Introduction Released

Last weekend, I was able to put the finishing touches on the Nefol Introduction and the end of Chapter 1. Last night, I sat down and made the first play through recording of the Nefol Introduction, which you can watch here.

The intro is a bit of a gag for those who are familiar with our other works at Sygnus.org and the story of FFIV. But we hope you can enjoy it in its little humble home-made ways.

Keep in mind that playing the game itself will have much better visuals than the video of it, but we’re not quite ready to start deploying the game itself. We haven’t decided if we will do it episodically, or in a big chunk, and what the limitations of either way might be.

So, until we work a few more things out, I’ll be making and releasing videos to tell the story instead. I know some folks would rather spend time watching a video, which they can do anywhere, any time, and not fiddle with downloading a game and messing with that.

So let me play the game for you!

Zelda BotW: All the Pretty Little Horses

botwspoilers

I spent the good part of a day catching and taming various horses just to check out what kind of stats they have. Horses that appear to have “less white” don’t always promise better stats for sure, I’ve discovered.

For example, this lovely blue horse with only white mane/tail (which I named grey instead of blue)…

2017030620522600-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

Has these stats, despite having no white markings.

2017030620520900-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

And this brown horse, which has four white feet and a lot of white on his nose…

2017030822361900-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

Has these stats…

2017030719491100-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

Needless to say, after catching and releasing several other pretty horses with lesser stats, I kept Path for stats alone. The brown horses aren’t the prettiest, but I’m sure I’ll find others in the future.

FFXIV: Kitty Returns & Umbrite Relic Complete!

It’s been pretty quiet on the FFXIV front up until this weekend. Now, all the sudden, I have lots of things to talk about.

Custom Deliveries Max!

First thing I completed this weekend was maxing out the crafting/gathering deliveries for Zhloe. As long as you turned in the highest quality level of materials you could, you gained a satisfaction heart with her every week. So this went pretty fast.

ffxiv_03242017_232627

Now, I can still keep turning in weeklies, but the item she requests is much more challenging, even for the gear that I own. However, I’ve been making good on my goal to upgrade my crafting and gathering gear this month.

I did eventually purchase the top crafting accessories and I have started melding materia… but that’s for a different reason that I’ll write about another time. 🙂

The cutscenes for the deliveries have been really cute, including the two orphaned kittens of Idyllshire. Seeing these two side by side elicited much “Aww” and “Squee” from me.

ffxiv_03242017_232453

This is important to note because I directly blame these kittens for putting the idea in my head to switch my race back to kitty.

Return of the Kitty

Back when I first did my character’s change-up in January, I purchased my first ever Fantasia. Only, I didn’t realize I still had a Fantasia left over from the free potions we got before. I thought I’d used them up, but I didn’t. So there it was tempting me and taking up retainer space.

The truth is, though I liked my character redesign, I missed my kitty. I especially missed how expressive some of her emotes were — there’s a lot of fun things the devs did with animations for ears and tail.

And while I still do have a Zuri character, I’ve hardly played her at all. I should have seen that coming — there’s still far too much to do on one character to even RP on another. It’s a bit of a bummer, but that’s the sad reality of it.

So, I took Zuri’s saved data and spun off a different kitty. I knew I couldn’t use the same settings as Zuri because that’s too ingrained as a different character in my mind. But she had most of the facial features I liked, so I used her template and changed a few things just a little bit.

ffxiv_03262017_174948

My happy place is that this time, I gave her tail a multi-colored design. So now her tail tip reflects her hair highlights. It’s little and silly but I can’t stop watching it as I run around doing things. 😀

I still don’t have a story behind the character, but I feel like there’s a lot of room to make one if I wanted. She has a lot of potential.

It’s weird being a small character again, but I think I’m going to be sticking with a kitty from now on out. Even if they are an overused race.

Umbrite Relic Finished

Going into this weekend, I was very aware that I only had 8 Umbrite left to finally complete the Umbrite Relic stage. I’ve been working on this so… so… long… It looks like I completed the previous step on September 12, 2016.

So, when I sigh to people telling them I worked on Umbrite for 6 months… I’m not making it up.

Anyhow, it’s done with much thanks to Syn and Amoon for running me through all sorts of stuff!

ffxiv_03262017_193730

My one grump about the whole thing is that this is the ugliest version of my weapon yet. I just can’t wrap my head around this whole face-on-my-weapon design. Sorry artists. This thing is just creepy.

ffxiv_03262017_193428

I hope the glow from the Singing Clusters phase can cover it up some cuz I’m going to be stuck with that version of the weapon until Stormblood. There’s no way I’m farming enough light to finish the cool glow-dragon step that I really want.

And, of course, I have one Umbrite left over… for when I can stomach working on the Paladin relic on down the line.

Paladin Progress

Speaking of Paladin, I’m now almost halfway through level 59 on my Paladin as of last night! So, I should be seeing a level 60 Paladin to complete my goal for this month. Technically, my goal was just to level it some, but I got into gear with Beast Tribes and daily hunts and started blasting through levels.

The other night, I was hanging out at the tail end of level 58. It was late and I wanted fast experience, but didn’t want to deal with FATEs or a party. So I decided to take on Floor 1-10 of PotD solo.

I didn’t know how well that would work since my gear was only in the teens and I was on Paladin. But I was very careful and made it through without any problem, earning that bit of experience to take me to 59. Woot!

ffxiv_03262017_013825

I really enjoy taking some content on solo just to see what I can do by myself. That’s always been something fun to do in MMOs for me. One day I’ll put more time into PotD solo, but for now, I just want to get this Paladin leveled!

FFXIV: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Relic

Okay, no. That title is 100% false. I still hate the Relic. Especially the Umbrite step (even after the nerf).

However, I have been successful in learning how to better balance my time and stress level in the FFXIV end game. This has mostly been me learning how to politely excuse myself from content I don’t feel up to doing, and not feeling bad about saying “no thanks.”

I’m also spending a balanced time doing solo dailies, such as Beast Tribes and Hunts, to level my Paladin to 60. Honestly, this has gone a lot faster than I expected it to. My Paladin hit level 58 last night, mostly from solo dailies since level 54. I know there are faster ways, but sometimes I just need time to self in an MMO.

ffxiv_03212017_214921
I found Void Ark while doing quests in Sea of Clouds the other day!

I’m very, very close to finishing the Umbrite step of my first Relic. And before anyone chides me for being so slow, I never had any intention to grind for this. I don’t always want to run roulettes daily, or sometimes run dungeons at all, when I log in. So this is the picture of what it looks like to be a fairly casual player struggling with Relic.

It’s not fun, and I’ve decided I’m not doing this again for anything but glamour… long after it’s been nerfed out of relevance. And that’s going to have to be amazing glamour for me to want to do it! 😀

I have about 5-6 Umbrite left to earn to complete this step, at the most. Less if I get lucky with bonuses… though I haven’t been very lucky through this whole thing. I think the Relic weapon hates me as much as I hate it.

ffxiv_03242017_074400

So, I’m buckling down in running content this weekend to make this final push. If I’m dedicated, I should be able to get this done in time to meet my goal to finish it this month.

I’m also trying to run Experts to finish gearing my Bard some. I’ve given up on the weekly drop from Dun Scaith, and will just outright buy the Shire coat tonight. I have a couple more pieces that need upgrading eventually, but I may or may not really concern myself with it.

I’ve already upgraded all of my Dragoon’s Shire gear to 270 and got the ring from DS as well. So aside from picking up alt class gear, I don’t really have a reason to keep running the raid weekly. I have a feeling I’ll be skipping out on those runs, soon.

ffxiv_03192017_164954.png

On a more positive note, next week’s patch brings new story content, which is the final bit we get before Stormblood. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of cliffhanger they leave us with. And, hopefully, not a Steps of Faith scenario to reach it.

We’ll see!

Zelda BotW: Wolf Link

botwspoilers

I’m not a big collector of amiibo. I only own two, and those came with special edition orders of Yoshi’s Wooly World (cute yarn Yoshi) and Twilight Princess (Wolf Link).

I totally understand the collect-ability draw behind amiibo. Maybe when I was younger, this would have appealed to me. But now days, I’m a little more practical, and I think to myself, “Where would I put them all if I had them?”

I also have grown to care about functionality… and for the most part, amiibo don’t add a lot to the types of games I play on my Nintendo system (I never got heavily into Smash). However, Breath of the Wild is starting to change my mind… mostly because amiibo have pretty good bonuses to them for once!

Of course, by the time I get slightly interested in looking for amiibo, they’re all gone and hard to find. But there’s one amiibo that I don’t have to go looking for: Wolf Link. I like wolves and I like Link, so I went ahead and bought the bundle for the amiibo back when Twilight Princess first came out. I haven’t actually played Twilight Princess, so it’s been sitting on my mantel every since.

wolflink

I’m now very happy that I did pick this up. Because I discovered that using this amiibo grants me a temporary Wolf Link companion in Breath of the Wild.

Now, if there’s anything I like almost as much as mounts, it’s pets. So this really put even more awesome into my BotW game.

2017030619423700-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

Wolf Link is pretty darn amazing. His default starts with three hearts, but if you level up the amiibo (?) in Twilight Princess, he can have a lot more. As I said, I haven’t played Twilight Princess yet, so I don’t know how this works. But I’m very tempted now.

He fight enemies with you and he automatically hunts animals in your vicinity, dropping meat for you to gather. If he’s short on life, you can also let him eat that meat to restore his hearts.

2017030619434100-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

He’s actually not half bad in a fight, and having something that so effortlessly hunts for you is amazing! If he does die, you can’t summon him again till the next day, but it’s still neat. Not to mention it just feels very cool to have a tough wolf fighting next to you.

Now, I’m not saying you should go out and pay the over-priced cost to buy this amiibo just for this, but be aware if you own the Wolf Link, it gives a pretty cool pet in this game. For once, I’m really glad I have an amiibo, and I am excited about the functionality of it.

Zelda BotW: Light My Fire

botwspoilers

Last time, I mentioned that I needed to take my incomplete Slate to the lab located in the village. There, I met Purah, who obviously remembered Link, though he didn’t remember her…

2017030517403500-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

She was more than willing to help restore the Slate, but there was one problem. The fire in the forge used to power the equipment had burned out. So I was tasked with re-kindling this flame.

I was told that there was a forge in town that burned with a blue flame, and that by taking a torch, I could transfer the fire to the one at the lab. Only, this wasn’t totally accurate. The forge wasn’t actually in town (took me a while to find it), more like on the outskirts of town near the sheep farms.

Once I did find it, though, it wasn’t too difficult to light my torch and carry it back. Purah also hinted that I should light the lamps along the way, which seemed like a solid tactic should my torch go out for any reason. So I did that.

2017030619042900-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

I’ve read about the frustrations of trying to do this when it’s raining outside. Thankfully, the rain held off until I got the forge up at the lab lit!

2017030619060200-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

Once that was done, I went back inside and restored the missing features of the Slate.

2017030619070600-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

These features… oh my gosh! As if this game didn’t give me enough to spend my time on!

So. Now, the Slate can work as a camera, something like your own mobile device. As you take pictures of things – creatures, plants, materials, weapons, items, enemies – they get listed in what’s known as the Hyrule Compendium.

Below is my woefully blank page.

2017030619075500-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

Yet another interesting system that challenges the completionist in you. I didn’t even know I needed (or didn’t need) it until I saw it.

On top of that, the Sheikah Sensor was also unlocked. This allows you to hone in on something, like shrines, and alerts you when you come near one. You can also take a picture of something and track it from the compendium!

2017030619080100-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

And last, but not least, Link discovers that the Slate already had some pictures on it!

Purah suggests Link take these back to Impa, who informs him that these may be tied to memories of his past. So, in visiting these locations, he might be able to start filling in the story of the past.

2017030619220600-F1C11A22FAEE3B82F21B330E1B786A39

I’m totally there… if I can find it.

This game just keeps on expanding and going in unexpected directions. Now, I’m left not just gathering everything, but trying to frantically fill my pages with pictures of creatures, weapons, enemies, etc.

This is crazy… in a great way!
