This week, we started coding Chapter 3 of Nefol. I also learned how to work with a new ambient lighting plugin!
This covers the story of how main characters Jin and Zento met. It touches a bit on the cultures of the clans of the north and their view on magic, which is highly taboo in their land.
This is also the only part of the story aside from the Intro that has ever been released publicly! Chapter 2 is almost complete, so hopefully sometime in May we’ll be getting into posting story that’s never been released before!
The big Chapter 2 battle is finally complete! I talk about finding some great new battle art and animations for RPG Maker in this week’s Nefol Dev Blog!
This newest dev post describes how it sometimes takes hours of research, and an unexpected method, to get simple things to work the way you hope in an RPG Maker game.
Bad sprites, lots of dialogue and more development on the Rai camp. Chapter 2 of Nefol has begun!
Last weekend, I was able to put the finishing touches on the Nefol Introduction and the end of Chapter 1. Last night, I sat down and made the first play through recording of the Nefol Introduction, which you can watch here.
The intro is a bit of a gag for those who are familiar with our other works at Sygnus.org and the story of FFIV. But we hope you can enjoy it in its little humble home-made ways.
Keep in mind that playing the game itself will have much better visuals than the video of it, but we’re not quite ready to start deploying the game itself. We haven’t decided if we will do it episodically, or in a big chunk, and what the limitations of either way might be.
So, until we work a few more things out, I’ll be making and releasing videos to tell the story instead. I know some folks would rather spend time watching a video, which they can do anywhere, any time, and not fiddle with downloading a game and messing with that.
Earlier this week I mentioned I was using RPG Maker VX Ace to attempt to create a visual novel style video of one of our script-based stories, Nefol. I’m pleased to announce that after a lot of stumbling through technical things, the Introduction has been posted!
I’d really wanted to do my own art for the intro movie, but it would have taken all that much longer to complete and would likely never get done. I’ve actually tried to make this into a movie before and have failed several times. So, while it’s not the most amazing video out there, it’s much more what I had in mind when I posted the Nefol scripts.
I don’t know how long it will take to make Chapter 1. Again, I have no art assets for it, so all that will need to be created from scratch. Not to mention much more sprite scripting and animation. We’ll see what comes of it, but for now, I’m happy to have one video finally out there (even if it is short).
