Pokemon — Let’s Go!

Details were released yesterday about Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. It seems to be a 3D sorta-kinda-remake of Pokemon Blue-Red-Yellow with some Pokemon Go elements and a drop-in multiplayer feature.

The response was a bit mixed from what I’ve seen. The Pokemon pureists groaned about seeing their beloved RPG series tainted by Pokemon Go. And some folks, me included, just saw it as a fun spin-off of the series with some neat overlap with Pokemon Go.

The pureists were somewhat pacified with the announcement that a new generation core game is in the works for the Switch for 2019. This is awesome news, too. Hopefully that makes everyone happy.

As for me, though I picked up Pokemon Blue back when the game first released a looooong time ago, I find it hard to go back to play the old style Pokemon games. I tried. It takes an old Game Boy, a screen that’s hard to see, and batteries.

I never finished my copy of Blue. I adore Pikachu. I skipped last year’s release of Sun/Moon remake. I’ve been trying to get back into Pokemon Go. So, I could use a new Pokemon game.

Color me interested. I don’t really mind if they’ve made the game easier to make it more appealing to kids. And while I’m not the greatest at the Pokeball toss in Go, I can deal with it. I haven’t been buying many full-priced Switch games this year, so I went ahead and plopped my pre-order down for Let’s Go Pikachu on Amazon.

I also downloaded the new Pokemon Quest (haven’t played yet) and caught several Alola Exeggutors today. 😉

Pokemon Go: First Legendary!

I guess I should be paying more attention to the Pokemon Go news. It says right in the newsfeed that you get a chance to catch Zapdos for finishing up field research quests. Somehow, it still took me by surprise when it appeared.

Not a bad surprise, but it did take just about every Ultra Ball I owned to finally catch it! I’m not a raider at all, so I’ve not really had a chance to catch cool Pokemon like this. It was a really awesome way to start the week in Pokemon Go. 🙂

Vegas Pokemon Conglomeration

Apologies in advance, this is going to be a really random post. Mostly, it has reference to a number of recent posts I’ve made, and a little to do with geeking and gaming. So, I figured it was relevant enough to ramble about.

Yesterday was my birthday. Syn, who has been my best friend for many years, was cooking something devious up, and I knew it. She mentioned it the night before, but I had no clue exactly what she meant to do.

Last night, she dropped the bomb on me: She bought me VIP tickets and a Photo op with my favorite band in the whole world – The Moody Blues. In Las Vegas. This September.

I was beside myself — mostly because it wasn’t cheap (but she had it in her head to do this, so I accepted the gift as graciously as I could). And then I thought of the planning I’d need to do for the trip.

And finally, the fact I really need to get into better shape before going on another trip. I spend my work time sitting in an office all day, and the time after that on the computer at home… and have for many years. I’m embarrassed to admit that my personal endurance and level of activity are both rock bottom, and have been for a while.

I mentioned in my post yesterday that I needed to start paying more attention to diet and exercise now that I’m not as young as I used to be. (Git off my lawn! :p ) And there’s nothing like a trip that requires being out of your normal elements to show you just how out of shape you are.

We had thoughts of attending the FFXIV Fan Fest again this year (not sure if that’s a thing that’s going to happen or not), and I told myself that I needed to get more active so I could feel better when I was in Vegas. Well, now I have show tickets, and am going to meet my musical heroes face to face. I really need to start moving!

And that leads back to Pokemon Go.

Yesterday, I joked and said that catching my first shiny was a sign that I needed to get back into the game. Well, here’s another sign that I need to get back to it, for health’s sake.

The nice thing is that there’s now a Pokestop in the local mall. Summer is starting up full force already — it’s going to be 90+ degrees today — and braving the heat at the local park is just too much (and dangerous).

While the park is much better due to having 2 gyms and several stops, having one stop in the air conditioned mall gives me a reason to walk the mall. Previously, the mall didn’t have a stop, much less many Pokemon to speak of (it was odd – lots of Pokemon in the parking lot, few inside the mall itself). I hope that’s changed!

Anyhow, that’s my ramble for today. I’m taking tomorrow off in celebration of my birthday, so I’m going to have a long weekend. Hopefully I can spend some time with Death Road to Canada and have something to write at you guys next week. 🙂

Pokemon Go: First Shiny!

I know it’s been a while since I’ve written about Pokemon Go. I’ve been a little out of touch with the game for a while, but I’ve kept it on my phone, and I check the news from time to time.

I keep thinking I should get back into it since it’s added things that sound fun — like quests, weather and things. And lots of Pokemon I haven’t caught yet. I wasn’t that into the whole raid thing, but I’ve heard good things about all the newer changes.

I guess this is a sign.

We went out to the local Mellow Mushroom for my birthday lunch today. The fountain there is one of my most visited Pokestops. I just haven’t been in a long while. In fact, I’m so low on Pokeballs that it’s one reason why I haven’t played much.

So, as we were eating, I was spinning the stops and catching whatever random Pokemon popped up. I’m not very familiar with the 3rd gen Pokemon, and I wasn’t paying much attention to what I was catching. I was more interested in getting stuff I didn’t have and filling that “Catch 10 Pokemon” quest.

Later on, I logged back in to review the quests I had (which I haven’t done much with) and see what I caught. That’s when I noticed an odd icon next to one of them.

Hold on a second… could that be?

An actual Shiny Meditite?

Can I just say this is the first ever shiny Pokemon I’ve caught in any Pokemon game. I mean, aside from the one time someone transferred a Shiny Steelix  to me that was infected with Pokerus.

And on my birthday, too!

I guess it’s a sign I need to get back into this game. 😉

Pokemon GO: Ditto & Gen II Pokemon

It’s been about a month since I’ve seriously played Pokemon GO to any extent. I was mildly interested in the Valentine’s thing, but had other things on my mind at the time, so it passed me by.

I did know, however, that a few things were going on this week. First, Gen II Pokemon were released yesterday. This was the big thing everyone has been waiting for, naturally.

To go along with that, they also cut the cost of the Pokemon storage upgrade in half. Seeing I don’t have that many coins since I’m not a very competitive player, I was happy to pick up the first upgrade at 100 coins.

On my lunch break today, I decided to see what new Pokemon I could wrangle up. This was my first Gen II:

What I found interesting here was rather than just needing candy to evolve, this Pokemon also requires a Sun Stone. Looking around, I read that these are new drops at Pokestops. I like this idea, as long as they aren’t too hard to get.

I then caught a:

and a

Then, something completely unexpected happened. I tapped on a Sentret with the thought of “Ooh, Gen II!” in mind. I noticed that it was kinda pink in color, but didn’t think much about it (I’m not super familiar with Gen II).

Turns out, Sentrets can be Dittos in disguise! And yes, this was my first Ditto, after all these months of Pidgies and Rattatas.

2017-02-17-11-36-33

The rest of my lunch break went like this:

2017-02-17-11-37-122017-02-17-11-52-572017-02-17-11-38-07

So there seems to be a pretty good selection of Gen II out there even in what you’d consider the “normal” spawns.

I also noticed the other week that the Sprint/Radio Shack store in our local mall now has a new Pokestop. This makes me super happy, because our mall was, strangely enough, a dead zone to Pokemon unless you were in the parking lot. This made no sense at all, and was super discouraging because I was looking for a cool place to walk at the end of last summer, and had to rule the mall out.

Now, not only does it look like we have spawn there, but a Pokestop as well. I really need to start walking and catching Pokemon again!

Oh, I also noticed they significantly changed my trainer’s outfit!

Pokemon Go: SantaChu Get!

I finally got my Santa Pikachu tonight! I’ve been looking for days, but didn’t give up. Driving home from work, I was slowly driving past the local Target and saw one in the parking lot. I quickly pulled over and nabbed him!

He was a toughie, and took a few ultra balls to catch. I was getting a little worried he’d run away, but he didn’t! 🙂

Pokemon Go: Hunting Santa Pikachu

The newest updates to Pokemon Go have renewed my interest in the app once again. The rain, however, has kept me inside and unable to go walking/hunting as much as I’d like.

Santa Pickachu

Most notably, the holiday event has brought us a Pikachu with a Santa hat. I’ve only ever caught/seen one Pikachu before this, so they’re pretty rare here to start with. In fact, they’re still fairly rare here, even with the event happening.

I’ve seen a Pikachu show up on my tracker twice since the update, but have been unable to find it both times. Yesterday, while shopping for groceries at the nearest Target (which has a Starbucks that did not become a Pokestop… bummer…), I saw a whole slew of Pokemon hanging out.

2016-12-13-17-05-58
None of them are Pikachu…

It’s nice that there does seem to be an increase in spawn, but none of these were what I was looking for.

Still haven’t found a Ditto, either!

Tracker Updates

Speaking of the tracker, I’m finally seeing the new tracking system they’ve added to the game. Honestly, it doesn’t do much to help me. If you’re close enough to a Pokestop, the tracker lets you know what’s hanging out at the stop. Everything else is still pure guesswork.

Since I’m rarely at a place that is near enough to a Pokestop, I’m still just as much in the dark as I’ve always been about Pokemon location. I guess it’s nice if you live in a city, though.

Gen 2 Arrival

We’ve also got new Gen 2 Pokemon in the game… but only from hatching eggs. And only from eggs that you received after the Gen 2 update. This is where I stand on this…

2016-12-14-10-17-38
Gotta hatch em all.

Old eggs. Every one of them.

Thankfully, I do have a few incubators that are working to speed up the process. I was using those even before the update came out, so I hope I can get to walking and get some of these hatched to pick up some new eggs.

Also, is it just me, but I haven’t found a 10K egg in a LONG, LONG time…

Those who are playing, are you having any luck scoring a Pikachu?
