FFXIV: Ninja-ing to 50

One of my goals for this month was to take my alt, Zemi, to level 50 on Ninja so I can finally unlock Samurai for him. I’ve actually been putting a good chunk of playtime each night towards doing this… and I forgot how rocky it really is to level from 40-50 on a DPS class for the first time.

Sure, the MSQ experience gives a nice chunk, but seeing that you have lapses where, such as level 45, there are absolutely no MSQs at all (why?), it really starts to drag out. I know I could be running daily roulette, but seeing that the queue took 25 mins for the Garuda fight, I’ve been avoiding dungeons (unless I have someone else to run them with).

It’s also a bummer that North Than FATEs aren’t very active anymore, because that used to be a good way to get these levels done. I’ll probably have to fall back on leves pretty soon.

Last night, I powered through to level 46, mostly because I unlocked two of the Beast Tribe quests, and found a number of extra quests littering Mor Dhona. Man, I forgot how much I hate the Nix in that zone!

Zemi is currently a mish-mash of half Ninja artifact armor. That’ll change once I get him to 50 and make the switch, though.

I have a funny feeling I’m going to get sidetracked by all the Halloween events in all the games I’m playing this weekend. We’ll see if I can keep Zemi leveling! 🙂

After the Eclipse & FFXIV Moonfire Faire

I’m just getting back into the swing of things after taking a few days off from life for a mini-vacation on the coast to view the solar eclipse earlier this week. It was an extremely cool thing to see in totality, and worth every mile we drove, even in backed-up traffic.

Eclipse Adventures

Syn and I headed to the coast, where I haven’t been in quite a while. It’s sad that I live about an hour away from a popular beach vacation spot, but I never go there. We spent some time on the pier and at the shore, as well as on the saltwater marsh walk, and through all sorts of shops and eateries.

2017-08-20 16.33.47

The day of the eclipse, we had to drive a bit further south from our hotel, and traffic was a bear. The day started out cloudy and rainy, but luck was on our side.

We found a nice little park that was out of the way and fairly quiet. There was a small group of folks out there — a photography club had gathered to try and snap some shots of the event. But everyone was polite and very into the event. I laughed as someone played Dark Side of the Moon while totality grew near.

2017-08-21 14.25.22
Sunny moment at the park.

The clouds often threatened our view, and even during totality, it was a bit hazy. But we got to see what we came for.

It was pretty surreal during the totality when the sky got dark, all the lights in the park came on, and there was a perpetual sunset on every horizon.

2017-08-21 14.48.19
Darkness falls at 1:47 PM as sunset spreads on every horizon.

This lasted about two minutes, and after that, the clouds moved over us in earnest. So it held out just long enough for us to enjoy the culmination of it all.

2017-08-21 14.56.58
Syn got a better picture of the eclipse than I did.

Solar Eclipse: 10/10
Would eclipse again.

Moonfire Faire

After seeing Syn off to the airport, I came home last night, and somewhat inspired by our ocean adventures, I decided to work on finishing up the Moonfire Faire for my level 30 Alts who still needed stuff from the event.

So, I got the outfit for Ben… who looks like he feels a bit drafty…

And Zemi, who took to it like a natural.

Of course he would.

I still have to finish up the event on Tai tonight. He managed to snag some battered fish out of the FC chest, so he’s all set. I just need to finish up the actual quest to get his gear.

As soon as this event comes to a close, we’ll have The Rising starting up. After seeing the teaser image, I’m curious what it’ll be about this year. Looks promising!

FFXIV: Dragon Ninja

I’m trying to get back into the swing of things after several days of being down with the cold. But during that time, I did make progress on one of my goals for this month – leveling Zemi and unlocking Ninja for him.

You might remember that I started Zemi as a Warrior, but then I decided I didn’t want to go through the MSQ as a tank (even though I probably could just fine). So I asked everyone to vote for what job he should take instead, and the result was Ninja.

The thing is, I left off on the MSQ at about level 27. So I had a ways to go before I could pick that up as a leveling tool again. I’ve been bumming leveling roulettes and PotD runs from FC folks, and had finally gotten his Rogue up to the upper 20s again.

Then, I remembered that dreaded sub-job leveling, which I think is going to be going away with Stormblood. So, I spent most of one of my sick days getting Zemi through the embarrassing pre-teen levels of Pugilist.

…not one of Zemi’s finer moments….

But that’s all over with now because I got back on the MSQ train and unlocked Ninja for him! Woo!

The plan is to take Ninja to 50 where I can hopefully pick up Samurai once Stormblood comes out. We’ll see how that goes. I’m not going to stress over it, though, because this is mostly a side project. I just think Zemi would look awesome in Samuari AF!

But for now, he’s moving along as Ninja.

Much better!

FFXIV: Starlight Celebration Arrives

Yesterday marked the beginning of FFXIV’s Starlight Celebration for 2016. The big rewards are the lovely, dyable Starlight Robes and the Starlight Celebration Orchestrion scroll.

Here’s a non-spoiler overview!

The quest itself is a sentimental story, much like you’d expect at Christmas, revolving around children, family and holidays. They give you the robes straight up front, so if all you want is the cosmetic, you don’t have to try too hard to get it.

Tai is not amused.

It’s not a super long quest line – I’ve run it through on three characters already – and the interesting thing is that finishing it opens up a repeatable daily quest. The scenario changes depending on what you choose, but the rewards appear to be all RNG. If you’re curious about the rewards, folks are gathering information about it on Reddit.

Strike a pose!

There’s also holiday decor for inside and outside of houses. Last year’s selection was a bit brighter, but hey… you get piles of snow that allow you to throw snowballs at each other!

In closing, have a creepy holiday paissa.

“Have you been good this year?” *stares into your soul*

FFXIV: Help Me Pick a Class!

The poll is now closed! I guess I’m going to be rolling Ninja for now, and coming back to Warrior later. Thanks all!

My alt, Zemi, is an Au Ra… again.

Similar to UltrViolet’s post about struggling with changing character appearance in FFXIV, I ran up against the same thing. I’d originally rolled Zemi as an Au Ra, but got into a funk where I thought I really, really wanted a Lalafell.

While I do like Lalafells, the longer I messed with Zemi in his new form, the more I missed his tall, lanky, overly proud previous-race. This is exactly why I saved Zemi’s character creation information. I had a second free Fantasia sitting in my inventory, and the other day, I ended switching him back.

But now on to the actual subject of this post… I’m having a whole lot of trouble figuring out what job to make Zemi. That’s the problem when you can play every class on one character. I’ve leveled so many of them to 60 now — and even leveled the same class twice between two characters!

It’s hard to get excited about playing an alt and going through all those forced story dungeons on an alt when you feel like you’ve already done it all before (twice). It doesn’t help that leveling roulette in FFXIV takes you back to all those old story dungeons, so you REALLY feel like you’ve done this a million times.

If I could just progress through this game without forced dungeons, I wouldn’t care what job I picked. But, alas, that cannot be.

Though I’ve removed the sprout icon next to his name, the game would still consider Zemi a new character. These are the jobs I’ve already leveled some:

So, I’ve unlocked Warrior and took Gladiator to 22 to get Provoke. I also started kicking around Arcanist with the thought of Summoner. But I don’t think I want to keep leveling a tank as his main job.

When I rolled Zemi as a Warrior, I didn’t have as many levels in tanking classes as I do now. Tai has a level 60 Paladin, a level 37 Warrior and a level 36 Dark Knight… Zuri has a level 30 Paladin and a level 36 Warrior, which I have been actively leveling. I really want to level a tank class on Zuri.

But most of all, I just don’t know if I want to go through all those story dungeons as a tank (I could always come back and level it later if I really wanted to). I’m a chicken. I know. But I haven’t played him in a long time, and I think this is the main reason why.

On the flip side, I feel that heavy armor looks best on Zemi. I dunno, I just find all the scales and the horns don’t mesh well with cloth gear. I haven’t found any mage-type hat that fits well around those horns. But tanking helmets look pretty awesome.

Along that line, I don’t want to level a third Dragoon, even though the job wears heavy armor. That feels too silly.

I don’t need another Bard or Machinist. Once is enough.

Ninja doesn’t really fit Zemi’s personality. But I won’t cross it off the list.

Summoner or Black Mage are both possibilities. I just don’t think the cloth armor looks very good on him. I guess I could glamour.

I don’t want to level another Monk. Zuri’s Monk is level 54, and I’m having a hard time holding on to the motivation to progress with it. I think it’s a solid class, but the playstyle just hasn’t clicked with me yet.

I know I don’t want to make him a healer class. Zuri is currently leveling her Scholar and will eventually have both White Mage and Scholar at level 60. I’d like to keep the healers all on Zuri.

So that narrows it down to these few. What should I do? Help!

FFXIV: Turning Lalafell and Finding Fun #blaugust2016

This post is a part of Blaugust 2016!

After reading through a lot of advice from my post about how to relax at end-game in an MMO like FFXIV (thank you), I decided to have a “I do what I want” weekend. I didn’t finish any of my Beast Tribe quests on Zuri, or work on Relic, and didn’t beat myself up over it. Instead, I spent way too much time with Posing Rangers and running Deep Dungeons until way too late in the night.

I also finally made up my mind to turn Zemi into a Lalafell.

This wasn’t an easy choice. The Au Ra was the only tall character I’ve rolled and played in the past, and the dragony style fits Zemi’s character. I liked some of the Au Ra prideful emotes as well. But overall, I still couldn’t get use to the male Au Ra’s overly grouchy/serious face and the horns, which really look silly when you try to wear a number of different hats.

I knew that I wanted to roll a Lalafell, just because they seemed like a cheerful and relaxing alternative to my end game characters. Neither Zuri nor Tai are meant to be Lalafell. Zemi already has earned a number of limited-time cosmetics, his chocobo, and other such things being a level 31 Warrior… so rolling a brand new character and doing all that over again felt a little silly. He also had two Fantasia bottles, so if I made the switch and didn’t like it, I could always switch back.

So, that’s what I did. I also took Zemi’s Warrior through the Hall of the Novice to earn the Brand New Ring. Then I switched to Arcanist and started leveling anew.

With my itty-bitty chocobo and carbuncle summon, I feel like I have a little zoo at my disposal. I need to take Zemi to get his Yo-Kai watch so he can at least get some minions while he levels. 🙂

Speaking of Yo-Kai, I earned Zuri’s third weapon this weekend, the White Mage kitty staff, which I quickly glamoured over the uh… ahem… “Boob Staff” she currently has.

I also finished leveling Gladiator to level 30 and unlocked Paladin, getting my final soul stone for Zuri’s jobs. This earned the Seeker of Blood achievement, which notes that I’ve completed level 30 quests for all Disciples of War classes. So one major goal finally complete!

This has also been a weekend of minions. First, Syn got the Calamari minion drop from Hullbreaker Hard, which she gave to me. This tentacle reminded me instantly of a throwback to Maniac Mansion or Day of the Tentacle… and it even pulls out a little blue ray gun to shoot people with!

My retainer also brought me a Titan’s Heart, which I quickly researched and discovered could be crafted into the Wind-Up Titan minion. And that is what I did.

All in all, I’m trying to do activities in game that are fun to me, rather than just what earns me progression. With quirky events like the Moonfire Faire and Yo-Kai Watch, it helps me to shake myself out and try to remember what I enjoy about FFXIV most.

FFXIV: Moonfire Faire Go Go Posing Rangers! #blaugust2016

This post is a part of Blaugust 2016!

Last night, I dove right into FFXIV’s newest event — the Moonfire Faire for 2016. I have never been a huge fan of Power Rangers, though I don’t dislike them either, so I wasn’t sure how much I’d enjoy these quests. Turn out they’re just campy fun, and I liked them quite a bit!

In fact, I dragged Vix, Xaa and Zeb through all of them, and completed the quests on 3 different characters. Only Zuri has earned all of the armor, poses, music and furniture, however. And doing the FATE repeatedly got her to level 30 for Paladin! Woot!

This also marked the return of Zemi’s character (as shown above), but that’s a story for a different time.

After we earned our poses, we of course had to have a pose party out in Costa del Sol. This was when an adorable group of Lalafell appeared and made their colorful ranger team pose along with us!

Aren’t they cute? This so tempts me to roll a Lalafell, I swear!

In fact, it also tempted Xaa, who was encouraged by Vix to make a race change. So he did, and ended up turning to the Lalafell side last night.

Needless to say, there was a lot of “awwwing” as he tried out his new character. They both seemed pleased by it and I’m more tempted than ever to roll Lala. I even considered turning Zemi into one… but I’m not totally sold that it would fit his character.

I mean, people end up doing things like this to you…

FFXIV: Chocobo Companion and Warrior Unlocked!

Yes, he’s still wearing the tin can. It’s just purple now.

I decided to buckle down today on Zemi and get some questing done. He was sitting at level 28 Maurader, and I wanted to get him to at least level 30 for the chocobo companion and start leveling Gladiator to 15 for the unlock. I just blew through quests and main scenario to hit 30 (I’m still leveled way ahead of what I should be). Was so happy to finally have a healing chocobo.

I then went back to work on Gladiator. I already had it at level 8, so I hit up all my hunting logs, quests and FATES to get to 11. At that point, the FC was having an impromptu Mumble night, and I mentioned I was out around Aleport running FATES. Suddenly, I had a random group of FC folks, just running FATES and chatting. And before I even knew it, I was level 16. I couldn’t believe how fast the experience came! I did not expect to get all that done tonight!

So I went back and did all my class quests, and unlocked Warrior for Zemi. Progress made! Now I just need to get him a different set of armor.

FFXIV: Zemi Progression

Thanks to kind FC folks, I tanked Zemi through Toto-Rak today, finally. I actually didn’t have that much trouble with it compared to the previous dungeons. It helped that I was 4 levels higher, I’m sure. 🙂

Now it’s time to push on towards unlocking Warrior!
