The beholder offered to give me the gate shard if I were to go to the city and uncover the priestess' secrets. Apparently she is making him out to be the enemy, though he found the temple in this state and has set himself up to be the guardian. 

I made a roll for intuition and Tsavani is inclined to believe the story. The creature does seem to be honorable, and it is offering to help. It's only fair to help in return.
