Zarylla did just fine on the sneaking and the lockpicking, but really it was all unnecessary. Because of course it was the kid stowing away - why wouldn't he want to jump on the ship setting out to rescue his mother? As he stated, his mom's gone and his home is destroyed.
It's too late to take him back home, so Zarylla agreed to let him work around the ship, and gave him a bunk.
(The other option was to throw the kid in the brig... really? After all he's been through?)
