The insects attack! Turns out, Quill didn’t really need the defense bonus in the end, however.
I had good attack rolls all the way down the line, and she was able to kill the first two without issue. My final damage roll was cruddy (just one point under what was needed to defeat the insect), but in casting Chaos Surge, Quill was able to add her wisdom bonus to the attack, which took it out, too.
Sadly, my roll for amber was lousy as well, and she only walked out of the fight with 2 amber to her name. It was still a good fight, even if I needed to cast a spell to make it fall to her advantage.
