Cora discovers the origin of the fake crests.
As I expected, it was the guildmaster. Though she passed the trial required to join the guilds, he tells her that the guilds are at capacity, so he can’t allow her in as an artisan under normal means. But because he feels the defense of the city can be bolstered by the additional artisans, he offers a fake crest to her, saying that if she can craft, but if she gets caught, there will be nothing he can do to help her.
She confronts him about giving out the fake crests. He tells her that as a child, his younger sibling was lost to the insects. Ever since, he’s been doing what he can in his position to protect the people of the city so that they do not have to deal with the loss that he did. Even going as far as to offer fake guild crests to artisans who come to the city.
