Cora makes for the fastest path home.
There’s no time to try and figure out what’s afflicting the critters. She does know that the road will make for the easiest path home, and decides not to venture into the forest.
This is mostly true, though she does hit some delays along the way. Overall, she only needs to use 2 meal rations on her way back home. However… she runs across a group of critters who are cowering off the side of the road at one point.
The thing that has made them so fearful is another one of the feral critters along the road. Cora is able to hide with them, and let the feral run on by with no damage done. But the fact there are ferals on the road now do not bode well.
