A couple days ago, Square Enix launched an official music channel on YouTube and it is an incredible resource and library for any S/E music lover. I meant to blog about this yesterday after having explored the channel a bit because I was very impressed!
It came pre-populated with a ton of playlists that encompass full game soundtracks – everything from Mana to Chrono to SaGa to the expected Final Fantasy. Looking at the FFXIV offerings, you can find everything up until the Shadowbringers soundtrack, including a number of albums released by the Primals.
There’s also more miscellaneous soundtracks – though I found a lack of Mystic Quest and wonder why Dragon Warrior didn’t get represented at all (yet).
Along side the official soundtracks, there’s also some remixed playlists for things like chill low-fi “Mellow Minstrel” music and more upbeat “Airship Cruise” tunes.
Seeing these are in playlists, I wonder if we’ll see more remixes coming in the future? Mellow Minstrel is about 2 hours long, and I’ve had it on in the background for the past few days, so it’s a hefty low-fi experience all on its own.
I’m not sure if other game companies have set up official and legal channels like this for their music, but I think it’s a fantastic idea! Rather than have fans posting music on YouTube and running the risk of getting copyright claims, here’s almost all the music you could want provided officially.
I’d love to see more of this, honestly, and am having a great time exploring libraries of music that I never have before.
