PC Gamepass Exploration: Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion

Posted on March 16, 2023 by Aywren

For last week’s Gamepass pick, I chose to check out Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion. I’ve seen the game around here and there, but had no idea what it was really about. I knew it was a rather short game (about 2-3 hours) based on the how long to beat score on the PC Gamepass page, which was one of the motivations for choosing the game.

I had no idea at the time, but this game was exactly what I needed to inspire me. I know that sounds kinda out there for a game where you play a turnip who has the option to literally trip and fall when you click the main interact button, but it’s true.

You see, Turnip Boy just don’t care.

He gets a tax notice from the government that his taxes were due like yesterday. What does he do with it?

Why, he rips it up without a worry in the world.

Thus, the tale begins where you quest across the land ripping up any documents your turnip hands can get a hold of. Something about that kind of sassy disrespect was strangely cathartic to me in dealing with what I have been IRL as of late.

So, while it’s a weird and unusual Zelda-like game, it brought a smile to my face due to its playful irreverence. I played all the way through the second dungeon to the second boss before I put the game down.

The one thing that bothered me was the controls for keyboard – I had a hard time getting used to it. In an action game that requires good timing, this made it harder than it needed to be. If I give the game another shot (and I might), I’ll see if it has controller support instead.

Anyhow, do I suggest Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion? If you’re in for a light-hearted action game romp where you can rip up tax statements, I do! Especially if you can pick it up cheap or try it out on Gamepass!

tl:dr - Sometimes I wish I could not care (about some things) like Turnip Boy.
