Second Life: A Home in Riverwalk

Posted on February 27, 2024 by Aywren

I don’t think I ever posted about my lot of Second Life Mainland that I picked up a few years back, once more in the Gandymede legacy sim. I used to have land in the same sim, but on the other side of the river, back when the Riverwalk park was the gem of that area.

Recapturing Riverwalk

I gave the Mainland up and moved to a Linden home for a while, but I would come back to visit my old home from time to time to see how it changed (this is just something I do). One day, I returned to find Riverwalk was sadly gone – though I didn’t know what happened to it.

Time passed, and I’d once more visit to find the waterfront area on the other side of the river broken up into parcels for sale. While it’s not cheap (for me) to own additional land in SL, I pulled the trigger and created a little spot called Sojourner’s Riverwalk Memories in honor of the old Riverwalk park. I’ve kept the spot for a while, mostly for my breedable pets (since they are not allowed at Linden houses), and often use it as my own fishing pier to invite fishing folks to chill.

But besides that, I haven’t used it for a whole lot since I do still have my own Linden house.

Alts in Second Life

Like any game I play, I have several alts in Second Life. SL actually doesn’t mind you owning alts since it often leads users to spending more money on alt customization and sometimes multiple premium accounts.

My Amon alt has gone back and forth owning his own Linden home in SL. I liked the Fantasy elf homes for him, and I could do things like deck out a music room and a secret lab. I dropped his sub for about a year, and then started missing his house… so last year, when I got my tax refund, I bought him a year’s sub once again and redecorated his home from the screenshots I found from his first house.

However, as the renewal for this account is rolling around in a few months, and I’m trying to save some money and consolidate subscriptions, I’ve looked at his premium SL account with scrutiny. Especially on top of the land fees I’m already paying on my main.

So, I made the choice to put my Riverwalk area to more use by moving Amon’s abode there, alongside of the fishing area and any pets I’m currently caring for.

The New Riverwalk Home

Over the weekend, I picked up a nice new fantasy-themed manor and began to recreate Amon’s place within it. It’s, of course, not exactly the same, but the more I worked on it, the more I’ve started to like it almost more than the original Linden home.

First, there’s the living area, complete with a down-sized snake terrarium. His previous snake terrarium was super nice but 30 prims, and that’s a bit too much for one decorative item.

Then there’s the music room, which is fairly similar to his old one.

Upstairs is his bedroom. I feel like this room needs a bit more to it, but I’ll figure that out later.

On one side of his bedroom is a “secret” teleporter which shoots you up to an area I blocked off in the spire of the building for his “secret” lab.

There’s a teleporter back down to the bedroom once you’ve seen the sights of the lab.

I made some landscaping adjustments, as well, picking up some new grass and flowers – that sort of thing.

Overall, I’m quite pleased with the outcome, and I think I’ll be fine with moving Amon to the Mainland for now. I’ve held on to his house just in case I decide to back out (I still have until late April on his sub), but I don’t think I will. The cost of a premium account isn’t terrible in terms of a monthly online game, but it’s still more than I want to pay when I already have a character with an account and land fees on top.

Saving money for the win!
