Uke Monthly Progress – June 2024

Posted on July 5, 2024 by Aywren

I’m a bit behind in writing this post due to other things going on lately, and I honestly don’t have a lot to report for the month of June.

I’m happy to say that I’ve maintained consistent practice every day. However, I’ve pared back that practice to just two tunes, and I haven’t made any progress towards anything else in the meantime.

While I didn’t mean to drop the fingerstyle elements of the EEI section of practice, I’ve not played Snake Charmer or Lil' Liza Jane in weeks, I’d estimate. However, I did start playing What Did the Deep Sea Say? from the Ukes for Dummies book over June.

I was able to get a good grasp on this tune, but then I set aside the fingerstyle for just playing this and Wayfaring Stranger every day. There’s not a lot of challenge in doing this, but with the summer heating up, other things requiring my time and attention, I suppose I’d rather stick to a holding pattern of the same tunes every day rather than falling out of practice all together.

I’ve been giving myself that room to breath with daily practice so that it doesn’t feel like a chore. I guess playing an instrument has seasons, like everything else. It’s okay to have a more dormant time, when you stick to what’s familiar, as long as you’re still picking up the uke every day to play.

That being said, I’d really like to return to the EEI stuff this month, and push forward with it. There is a new tune upcoming that I think would be fun to play, and I would like to get to it one day!
