FFXIV: Dawntrail Fantasia Changes and Getting a Free Fantasia

With the graphic upgrades to player characters in FFXIV Dawntrail, there have been several changes to the fantasia feature in the game. I’ve used the free fantasia that was offered to players – mostly to allow you to tweak your character after the graphic changes – so I wanted to weigh in on this new experience.
A fantasia is the item you use in FFXIV to change just about everything about your character – from race to gender and all the different customization that makes your character unique. It’s very nice to have, coming from some MMOs that require several different features to change appearance, race, and gender… or may not allow for changing one of these things at all.
While fantasias usually run you $10 on the online store, you can get a hold of a bottle for free. The new quest “Bottled Fantasy” – which you can do once you’ve completed the level 17 MSQ quest “The Scions of the Seventh Dawn” – gives everyone a free fantasia early on in the game. It’s a quick quest where you just talk to a couple NPCs in Ul’dah to score a bottle.
The other change to fantasias might be one people overlooked, but it’s just as important. Now, when you use a fantasia, the game allows you to continue to edit your character up until 30 minutes of in-game time. This means that you can make changes, run around in game, and decide if you need to make additional tweaks along the way.
Maybe you didn’t like the voice you chose. Maybe the eye color wasn’t quite right. Maybe you wanted to be shorter or taller.
Back in the day, you had to get it right the first time, or pony up another $10 for additional changes. And this is not me talking from experience… right… right…? (Yes, I have done this.)
When I made a change to one of my characters just yesterday using the free fantasia, I was pleased to be able to make a few tweaks here or there after I’d brought them into the game and saw what they looked like running around in real time. It made an already nice feature and even nicer one, and potentially saves me some money on down the line.
While I’m not a chronic fantasia user like some folks, I want my characters to look and feel right to me. Even something as small as the lip shape or eye tilt is enough to drive me to fantasia again.
