New Year, New Desk

Posted on January 2, 2025 by Aywren

I was absolutely not intending to get a new desk anytime soon… but I have.

The previous desk was one that I bought and put together back in 2015. In fact, I blogged about putting this desk together.

Almost 10 years ago, it was a good sturdy desk. Even now, it’s a good sturdy desk. So much that I couldn’t deconstruct it and was forced to find a way to push it into the guest bedroom (cat room) for storage. I’m glad I did because it’s still a good-looking desk made of solid materials and deserves more than being hauled off into the shed.

Plus, the cat is happy to have it.

So why did I get a new desk if the old one was perfectly serviceable?

Here’s a picture of the old desk shortly before I decided to buy the new one. Please pardon the mess.

I’m primarily a PC user for just about everything. Now that I also work from home, my desk area has become the center of most of the hours of my day – and I have to fit a small work laptop in this area along with my own PC setup. Back when I got the desk, I had no thoughts of having more than one monitor for my PC. Now days, having at least two monitors is pretty much where I’m at.

Whenever I wanted to work on my art, I had to connect my Wacom One, which acted as a third monitor. However, I didn’t have the room to keep it plugged in all the time. When I did pull it out, I had to shove the keyboard out of the way to make space for it while I used it.

I bought a small rectangular table to help add some surface area, and put that over the top of my PC cart on the left side. It didn’t take long before the printer and books and everything else engulfed that bit of space, too.

Basically, I was running out of space.

It didn’t help that the underneath was built in a way that a computer chair only had one place it could be. I couldn’t scoot to the left at all. I also lost a lot of space on the right due to the drawer and the dip in the desk. This was nice for things like holding supplies, but when what I needed was more up top surface space, this became a hinderance.

The straw that broke things was the fact that Syn offered me her 22” Wacom drawing monitor when I was visiting over the holidays. This was not the first time she’s mentioned wanting to give this to me.

However, I’ve always turned it down due to the fact that I just don’t have the space… and I have no idea how to deal with a drawing tablet that size. The biggest I’ve ever used was a 13”.

This time, she seemed quite adamant about getting rid of it. Though I knew I didn’t have the space for it, I finally agreed to take it. Once I got it home, however, I saw NO way of setting this up with the space I had to allow me to properly use it for art.

After mulling over the space situation, I just didn’t see any other way but to buy a new desk. So, here it is.

Granted, it looks more like a table than a desk to me. It was listed as an office/writing/gaming desk, which fits pretty much everything I need it to be. While my setup is not absolutely perfect, it’s far more comfortable than I had before, and I’m happy I made the change.
