Nintendo Switch 2 Announcement - Why Should I Switch from Switch?
Posted on Month 00, 2025 by Aywren
This week, the news many of us have been waiting for arrived – the official announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2. We got a nice hardware trailer and a little bit of information about the system, with a promise of more info to come during the Nintendo Direct on April 2.
We can see a sleek, larger screen with the magnetic-attaching joycons. Some new buttons, a small change up in controls and ports, that sort of thing. We can imagine that it’ll be a more powerful system than the Switch, as well. Overall, however, we see they’re not deviating from a winning design too much.
I just hope the joycons don’t suffer drift this time around.
Backwards Compatibility
We also know that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with most Switch games. The page notes, however, not every game will be compatible, and that the Nintendo site will have more details about what this means later.
Some speculate that this means things like the Labo or the Ring Fit (which requires specific size/shape joycon) will likely not be supported fully on Switch 2. I don’t think this will be a huge deal, however, but it’s still a wait-and-see thing.
Being backwards compatible with even most games was a must-have for me when considering the Switch 2. However…
Why Should I Switch from Switch?
We still don’t know the price, the release date, and what games we have to look forward to just yet. I’m sure this will be stuff we learn from the Nintendo Direct, and I’m willing to wait.
As happy as I am with what I’m seeing, I don’t feel an overwhelming pressure to move on from my Switch just yet. Heck, I just invested in new joycons for it last year. I need to get my money’s worth out of those because we all know joycons aren’t cheap!
I was a day-one adopter for the original Switch, and it’s the Nintendo system I own the most games for, hands down. While I still don’t play it as much as I’d like to, that means it’s just gently used, and my Switch has plenty of life left in it.
The Switch, when released, did something I wanted to see in a console – it provided hand-held gaming meshed in a TV console. That was revolutionary for me, and that’s what made me drop the cash on the Switch on release.
Truth is, I hardly play it undocked. I’m still not much of a mobile or handheld gamer.
While a bigger screen seems nice for the Switch 2, that seems to be an improvement meant for the handheld crowd, moreso than me. So bigger screen and larger joycons (I have small hands and never had trouble with the current joycons), really isn’t a draw for me.
This is also the reason I dabbled with thoughts of a Steam Deck, but never committed. I know I’m not much of a handheld gamer. Heck, I hardly use my tablets as much as I like to.
I’m not saying that will never change, but I just know my habits. So, until I see a solid reason why I should step up for a Switch 2 as a TV console gamer, I will be holding on to my money.
A solid reason could be a good exclusive list of games. Yeah, we’re seeing a Mario Kart there, but that’s not as much huge draw for me as it was when I was much younger. Another solid reason could be that it vastly improves performance on a number of my current Switch games – some of which I’ve not played because I was waiting for stability patches to come out for them from third parties.
My verdict is: I’m very happy Switch 2 is a thing. But I’m waiting to see if it’s something I need right now or if I can just wait until it’s a special edition bundle with a game that I really want on down the line.
I still wish I could have gotten the Animal Crossing Switch with those lovely colored joycons. *sigh*
Until then, I still have so much to enjoy with my current Switch. Trust me, though, I’m going to be tuning in to the news and keeping up with all this!
