Second Life: Membership Improvements – And A Switch to Stilts
Posted on February 11, 2025 by Aywren
Yesterday, Linden Labs announced a fairly sizeable improvement to all of their membership plans, which has Second Life residents in a buzz. This news has also made me reconsider what I’ve been doing on the grid – something that’s been hovering in the back of my mind for a while.
The changes to membership perks are as follows:

These are all nice to have, and some folks are really hyped for the change in group limits. I don’t care as much about groups… in fact, all I care about are prim limits. Now, these prim boosts are strictly for owners of Linden Homes – this is not about increasing prims on mainland (more about that later).
Honestly, I’ve long felt the whole prim limit system is extremely constrictive, but if you own land in Second Life, you live and die by the prim limit. They could increase it however they like, but for some reason, stay pretty closed-fisted on their offerings. Boosting my Linden Home prim limit by over 100 is nothing to sneeze at and something sorely needed.
The other big news is that Plus members (which is a step down from Premium) can now own a 512 Linden House! I didn’t even give the Plus membership a glance when I found out they got no Linden House offer at all. They had to go mainland or nothing… which was utterly silly.
I think there will be quite an uptick of Plus members with this offer – even if that just means for alt accounts (something I’m considering). I can’t imagine Premium members wanting a smaller 512 lot, and from the looks of it, there’s quite a few of those houses open for this very reason. This is an excellent entryway into Second Life membership at a much more affordable cost – plus they will also get the benefits of the new prim count increase for Linden Homes.
Change of Scenery
I’ve owned my cabin since back in 2020 – I had no idea it has been that long until I looked back at my post on it. I still enjoy my cabin, especially for the holidays. However…
Since then, a number of new options have been released, including beach houses that are better known as “stilts.” I used to own beach houses in the past in Second Life, and they are quite popular. So, while I loved my cabin and the area I lived in, I decided it was time for a change of pace.
The only thing is, if you want a stilt on water or off the dock, it’s pretty tough to come by, apparently.

So, when I looked at the housing page and saw just 1 was available, I packed up all my stuff on a whim, prayed that I was fast enough, and snagged it! I was fast enough, and now I’m the owner of a new stilt!
The only thing is, most of my beach house furniture is older and primmy, so it’s going to be a small investment on shopping for things that better fit this house’s style. Most of my stuff was leaning towards rustic cottage vibes. While some of that I can still reuse, much of it doesn’t mesh at all.
Anyhow, sure enough, after the rolling restarts this week, my Linden House has a LOT more prims to work with!

Releasing Mainland
The other thing that’s been on my mind for a while is letting go of my mainland lot. It’s not particularly cheap to keep around, as much as I love having it.
I haven’t really been breeding pets, nor have I been using it as a shop (since you can’t do either at your Linden House). I’ve done everything from setting up a fishing spot there to moving in my Amon alt to justify to myself why I should keep it. Aside from the nostalgic reasons, of course.
Truth is, it’s become a money sink for the amount of time I spend with it. While the large prim count is nice, with an increase in prim count for Linden Homes, it would be cheaper for me to just drop that cash on a premium or plus account for Amon – and he’d be getting a L$ stipend on top of it.

So… I’ve made the hard choice to pick up all of my stuff there and put the lot on sale for what I feel is a pretty good price – I’m taking a loss on it based on what I paid. I’ll give it a few weeks – my next land fees aren’t due until Feb 28. I hate to abandon it, not because I want money back on it, but mostly because it’s a nice location with nicely decorated neighbors, which is rare for Mainland.
I’ve put up a post in the official sales forum, so hopefully someone will bite and make it their new home.
In the meantime, I’m looking forward to decorating and shopping for my new stilt home! I haven’t fully decided what I’ll do with Amon yet, but I’ll update here when I do!
