OSRS: The Angler’s Outfit
Posted on August 13, 2025 by Aywren
Consider this post a draft over a year in the making as it was about that long ago when I earned my Angler’s Outfit in Old School RuneScape. I’m not sure why I never wrote this post (bad blogger!) because I was absolutely stoked at the time of achievement.
This outfit took me many, many Trawler trips to earn as a fairly new player, and was the first big achievement I made in the game. Granted, I haven’t played since my initial month ran out, and I’m not so sure I want to play as a free player having tasted Member status. The price of Member status has also gone up since I last played, which, given how much I’m engaged with FFXIV right now, I’m not sure I want another MMO sub – especially one like OSRS that requires quite a time investment.
I know that OSRS has suddenly grown in popularity this summer, so I thought it was a good time for me to fish up (see what I did there) the screenshots and the story I remember from last year. I still have yet to actually put this gear to use for fishing, though I absolutely should I decide to hop back in, even on the free version of my account.
Trawler Travelling
To get the Angler’s Outfit, you have to participate multiple times in the mini-game called Fishing Trawler. The idea is that you and a group of people must work together to keep the ship safe and afloat from the dangers of the high sea. This appeared to be a very popular game as the ship was always full when I played it, and there’s a server dedicated to just the Trawler game.

As long as you’re a level 15 fisher, you can participate. The game has various random interactions such as fixing broken nets, repairing broken railings, bailing water that’s filling the ship, filling holes in the bottom of the ship, and fighting off the kracken tentacles.
You get so many points for each successful action you take, and must earn over 50 points to be rewarded for the event.
Some of these activities require you to have materials on hand, most of which I didn’t as a low level player. So, I focused on attacking the kracken when it appeared.

The only thing was, the success of hacking kracken tentacles was based on your woodcutting skill as you’re using an axe to chop it. After running the Trawler a number of times, I noticed while I could successfully earn 50 points, sometimes I couldn’t due to the fact my chops were missing too often.
The Kindness of Strangers
That only meant one thing – I went to land and focused on leveling my woodcutting skill and purchased a better axe.

During this, I ran across another kind player who was also leveling woodchopping. We chatted a bit, I told them I was fairly new to the game, and that I was working up woodcutting to earn my Angerl’s Outfit from the Trawler.
They very kindly asked me to trade (I had to quickly figure out how), and they dropped a TON of gold and other high-level fish (which I could sell) in my inventory! Quite overwhelmed, I asked them if they were sure about gifting this to me, and they answered: “Yes. You’ll need it.” I still have most of that gold still in my bank, and did not forget the one who gifted it.

Which… makes me want to go back to the game simply because everyone I interacted with in OSRS were amazing gamers and very generous to new folks!
Back to the Ship
Once I’d gotten my woodchopping level a little more presentable, I returned to the Trawler for the grind. The wiki page notes that statistically speaking: “There is about a 50% chance of acquiring the full angler's outfit within 44 trips.”
Thankfully, you can’t get duplicates of the outfit pieces (From the wiki: “Players have a 1/12 chance of receiving a piece of the outfit that they do not currently own.”). So, whenever you do get a drop, it will always be something you didn’t already have.
I tell you, the wiki and add-ons that give you information – such as how many times you’ve run the Trawler and the drops you’ve gotten during those runs – are very, very common tools in OSRS. Insomuch, they are both built into the RuneLite viewer sidebar.
As much as I didn’t mind running the Trawler – and folks kept it lively with chat about how many runs they’d been on and their awful luck on drops – I was super happy when the final piece – the hat – finally fell in my net!

Based on my stats, it took me 48 runs to earn the entire outfit. Not bad considering some of those runs were fails due to my low level woodchopping.
And so, there I was, a proud owner of the Angler’s Outfit! Now… I probably need to return to the game and do something with it!
