FFXIV: Main Change – The Allagans Finally Win
Posted on November 14, 2025 by Aywren
So, once more, last night, I’ve changed the identity of my Main Character slot in FFXIV. Yes, I know that I did so back in April. And yes, I realize that what I’m doing now is flying in the face of what I wrote back when I talked about this character change then.
Thank Yoshi-P for giving me the free fantasias to enable my name-change addiction. And thank Syn for making a side observation such as, “Amon might as well be your main since you play him so much.”
Yes. Yes, he should.
I even considered it heavily back when I switched up my account in April. But there are things that I’ve achieved on my Amon Alt account that I don’t have on my Main character slot. I mentioned that in this post as the major reason I didn’t choose him back then:
I would love to make Amon my main, but he has too many things tied to his character slot. Certain mounts, minions, purchased emotes – that sort of thing. He also has community ties in terms of people on his friends list. Not to mention his Tea and Tomes apartment and his Secret Lab FC room, which I would not want to try and replicate. So, he was eliminated.
But the longer I’ve gone trying to maintain two fairly well geared and well-rounded characters in FFXIV, the more exhausted I’ve become. Maybe I’m just getting old. Or maybe, really, this game lets you do so much on one character that pushing myself to keep up with two, as I have the last 7 years, was just silly.
Amon started out as an RP Alt, and was never intended to be anything more. However, as much as I told myself I didn’t need to gear him up, or run the latest content, or earn the mounts… I still kept searching out projects for him and adding more duplicate effort to the list. Frontlines, gearing, relic grind, deep dungeons, Occult Crescent, Island Sanctuary, society quests, omni crafting, omni gathering, raids... I've done much of this twice.
This wasn’t such a big deal back when this all started – over 7 years ago when I first rolled Amon. But now, in the throws of Dawntrail, where I struggle just to get my other alts to the end of MSQ, I’m really starting to feel the burn out.
And given that I just got tickets for Fan Fest next year, I do NOT want burn out. I want hype!
What will making Amon my Main do for me?
Firstly, I can consolidate my effort to one character. This doesn’t mean I won’t play and level alts. But I won’t need to worry about gearing up two characters, running roulettes on two characters, running Frontlines every day for the new Series on two characters… Yeah. I don’t mind doing these things once a day, but doing it twice, and the time sink that it requires, has gotten to be too much.
Secondly, Amon will inherit my personal house. He has a themed RP location associated with him called Amon’s Tea and Tomes. It was previously located in his personal apartment, but now that I have full run of a small house – and looking towards upgrading it with the housing updates one day – I will have something to focus using my house for.
Another big project, but an exciting one!
And last, I can now work on all my projects on Amon. I’m not sure how to explain this one, but it’s almost as important as not duplicating work across two characters, and is fairly much linked.
Basically, I enjoy playing Amon and I like choosing a goal or project to work on. For example, I’d love to get him the “World-class Troller” title from Ocean Fishing. Or I’d like to max his chocobo racing. Or collect Triple Triad cards for the card mount. Those sort of projects.
However, anytime I thought to do something like that on my Alt character, I’d tell myself… “But man, I want that on Main, too, and Main comes first.”
Guess what happened then? I didn’t work on the goal at all for either character.
So now, I can confidently say, “I want to be World-class Troller, I want to work on this, and I can get it for both Main and Amon now!”
This is a huge win for me!
I have a sizable list of projects that this change has brought to me, however. As I noted, there are things that Amon Alt has that my Main never achieved simply because I didn’t go back and do it twice on Main. Some of these projects include:
- Snek runs to earn the Cadu minion again
- Runs to earn the Allgan Skyslipper mount again
- Rebuilding Amon’s R&D Lab in his personal FC room again
- Completely renovating my personal house to be Amon’s Tea and Tomes
- Unlocking current raid so I can get Dancing Green’s fashion glasses again
- Change and re-level his Grand Company to Adders
- Chocobo and retainer changes
- Reobtain some glamour and emotes that I had on Amon but not Main
This sounds like a lot – and it is – but I think that the time spent up front here will ultimately save me time and effort in the long run as I will no longer need to divide my focus between characters. And maybe… just maybe… this will be the final time I change mains.
Can I hope?
