Project: Gorgon Launches into 1.0!

This past week, Project: Gorgon, a quirky old-skool type MMO that has been in development for quite a while, finally launched to 1.0! I Kickstarted this game over a decade ago, and first blogged about it later that year in the pre-Alpha state.

When the Steam version launched ten years ago, I was there to try that out, too, including the at-that-time new newbie starting experience. This experience seems to have gone fairly much unchanged since then – but more on that later!

While I had a lot of fun poking around at the game in alpha, I kept true to my words at the end of that post: “I’m holding back on playing P:G too much, despite being a Kickstarter backer, because I don’t want to spoil too much of the game before it gets further in development.”

I kept up with the development and news here and there throughout the years, but did not log in again. However, upon hearing that the game had moved into a launch state this week, I redownloaded the Steam version and took a peek around the game.

My old character, whom I’d left back on the newbie island was still there! Even better, I had the option to update the old character to the newest character models. The one thing P:G was notorious for was the old-skool character models, so it made me happy to see there were massive improvements here.

Don’t get me wrong – this isn’t FFXIV level character design. However, there’s a lot of unexpected flexibility here. Similar to the Sims create a character, you can select from pre-sets or drill all the way down into creation using sliders.

Sliders!

Once I got back into the game, I was deposited right where I left off nine years ago, on the newbie island. It was hopping for the second day after launch, so much that there was a scarcity of skeleton enemies for folks to farm as part of the quest line.

Thankfully, I’d finished everything up until the quest that would ultimately take me to a teleporter off the island. So, I didn’t need to fight others for the mobs or go through the caves or anything like that. I set out re-remembering the UI and the way the game worked, and was quickly back to exploring the island and progressing through my final quests to head to the mainland.

I quickly remembered what it was that made me enjoy this game so much – quirky NPCs and story. Like the NPC who sent me on a quest to bind myself to the warp stone on the newbie island, then realized his mistake… as I wouldn’t be able to get OFF the island since I was now bound to it.

There’s also an interesting overall story that I picked up on when I hit the “mainland” area. Your character was apparently a hero of some report who was transformed into a horror that ravaged the world… only to have your memories wiped to spare your death. And thus, you are but a level nothing newbie with no memories or skills who must relearn everything from the start.

Anyhow, I didn’t have a lot of time to put into the game when I picked it up, and I got sucked into what I was doing far more than I meant to. The community is hopping, and world chat was a constant flow – though surprisingly civil and fun.

I discovered I had several titles that marked me as someone who has played since pre-alpha, as well as the new “I WAS THERE” purple title you get for being there during the launch window.

I also apparently have one month of free VIP having been a Kickstarter backer, but I need to do some more research into the game, the tiers, and the perks of VIP. I’m not sure I have the time to put into P:G just yet, so I don’t want to waste my free month until I know more and have more wiggle room.

I won’t go into too much detail on the things I love about this game – the old-skool vibes are just as I remembered it! Not to mention animal play, fun skills you won’t find anywhere else, and just… well, if you’re an old-skool MMO fan like I am, it’s worth checking out if you haven’t already!

On Steam, P:G is buy to play (but is on sale right now). There’s no forced sub, and the game remains free to play once you’ve bought it, but you can back the game and get perks by being a monthly VIP. There’s also a free demo to try out if you’re on the fence!
