FFXIV: Patch 7.5 Biggest Quality of Life Features – Opening Up Inventory Space!

No story spoilers in this post!

I’ve been playing through FFXIV Patch 7.5 on all my up-to-date characters, as I do. While the newest story is a big move in the right direction, and the latest Fan Fest has ramped up general hype for the game, I wanted to talk about one of the most important perks of this patch, IMHO.

That would be QoL improvements that have freed up so much of my retainer space!

Inventory management is a challenge for all MMOs, and FFXIV is no different. While I do my best to keep things organized, the inevitable item creep seeps in there, and I find myself offloading things through the FC chest to my lesser-played alts.

Housing Updates

This has been especially true in the case of housing items. Specifically, the outdoor items. When so many limited-time holiday events start rewarding stacks of furnishings, again, especially outdoor items, I don’t want to pass on something I know will be put in the in-game store for RL money in a year.

But at the same time, only owning small houses hasn’t given a lot of storage for outdoor items traditionally – only 20 slots in storage, and 20 slots for actual placed items! Especially when I’m juggling items for my own house and well as those I’ve earned for the FC house.

Therefore, the housing updates in this patch, which allow for more items placed and stored, were huge for me! Not only could I place more decorations, but I was able to offset a number of housing items from my retainers and the FC chest into proper storage.

Of course, with only 40 slots of storage, while double what we had before, I still filled it up instantly. But a small win is still a win.

Dye Consolidation

I’ve always been a dye collector in every MMO that has dyes. In FFXIV, it wasn’t rare for me to have more than half a retainer page filled with dyes I’ve saved since 2013. Some characters were worse off than others, so in terms of freeing up space, I’m thankful for the new dye consolidation.

With this change, the most common dyes have been merged into three types:

  • Standard Spectrum Dye
  • Wide Spectrum #1 Dye
  • Wide Spectrum #2 Dye

While this did kill the dye market, which I’m sure made some folks sad, it does make it far easier to dye anything when all you need is one item that acts as an entire selection of dyes.

This changed my inventory from taking up nearly a whole retainer box to something more like this:

Of course, there’s still a few types of dyes, such as general-purpose, that weren’t consolidated, but overall, the space I won back from this change was nothing to scoff at!

Armoire and Glamour Dresser Updates

This patch has also brought the start of a pretty big change to the armoire system. You can now place all artifact gear and the dungeon gear from Dawntrail dungeons in the armoire!

Not only does this save a lot of space in the glamour dresser, but it’s the first move to provide a sort of wardrobe specifically for dungeon drops. I now find myself running to the armoire all the time as I get new pieces from my retainer ventures or upgrades from dungeon gear on all my jobs.

While this doesn’t save retainer inventory, so to speak, it is sorting out gear inventory, which can get clogged very quickly. The only option previously was to dump everything that can’t be marketed on the Grand Company for seals. You simply couldn’t save everything! Until now!

While this is currently only for Drawntrail dungeons, this sounds like the start of a wardrobe concept that may reach back into older expansions in time. It also allows for more complete sets and collections without taking away from the space in the glamour dresser!

A very good direction to go!

I was at the NA Fanfest when the patch notes dropped this time, so I wasn’t able to sit down and write a post about all the patch 7.5 changes and what I thought of them. While there were a lot of great new things – petting the chocobo! – features like this that help clear my inventory are a huge YES from me!

Have you played patch 7.5 yet? If so, what’s your favorite new feature?
