FFXIV Mobile = Canceled ā Switch 2 Release a Go
Posted on August 6, 2026 by Aywren
I’d heard rumors that the FFXIV Mobile version would be canceled about a week or two before the official website posted an announcement. Because I’m honestly not sure how long the site will remain up, I’ve screenshotted the info and placed it in this post below.

Sadly, the only reason we were given that the mobile version didn’t fly was due to “adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment” whereupon “Tencent and Square Enix have, through amicable negotiation, decided to terminate the licensing agreement for FINAL FANTASY XIV MOBILE”.
So basically, a lot of PR speak for very little info.
Now, I was never going to play the mobile version of FFXIV. Even if it was free to play, I am not a mobile gamer, as I have very little trust in the longevity of mobile games. I’ve just seen too many apps come and go, taking players’ money with them as they shut down mere years after launch.
It appears that FFXIV Mobile was no different in the long run. While it never got beyond the Chinese release, there was a cash shop, and people did put money into this game. Whether it was the case that not enough of this money was spent, I guess we’ll never know. But there are no refunds here. The game is merely ceasing to be.
A part of me wishes folks would finally come to realize that about 95% of the time, money spent on mobile apps, especially for apps with predatory features, is completely lost in the end. Yes, I know there are still some of these games running, but the majority of them do not last.
And yet… it seems that FFXIV has a semi-mobile replacement for their lost app already.
The Switch 2 Release
That’s right. As of this week, you can pick up and play FFXIV on Switch 2.
And while this isn’t a fancy mobile remake in the same way that the canceled Chinese version was, it’s the closest thing to playing FFXIV on the go that we have. And for some people, I suppose this is an exciting proposition.
Of course, not owning a Switch 2, I haven’t personally tried this yet. But Meoni has done a good overview of how it runs here:
From what I see it seems more responsive than I’d have expected. There are a few bugs noted here, such as long loading times when rezzing from death, but the comments say that S/E is aware and working on a fix.
Now, the biggest thing to keep in mind about the Switch 2 version is that you will not only have to buy the game again, but you must pay a second subscription to upkeep the Switch 2 version alongside other versions. However, if you have a current subscription, the Switch 2 sub is discounted to half price.

So, if you have the Switch 2, and you’re interested in this as a mobile alternative, then it’s going to be up to you whether or not a second sub is worth it. Of course, you can always cancel your other sub and just go Switch 2 completely – this does allow you to play docked on a larger screen as well as taking it mobile with you when you want.
I just have concerns of how long the Switch 2 will be able to keep up with the increasing specs of the game as it evolves. Especially in the case of how much storage it will require.
Though I suppose I don’t really have a chocobo in this race as I’m not the target audience. I’ll continue to enjoy the game on PC exclusively. But for those who have the means to play it on Switch 2, I hope they iron everything out for you to enjoy!
If you’ve given it a try, let me know what you think!
