FFXIV: Alt Realities
Posted on October 16, 2026 by Aywren
As most of you who have followed me for any length of time probably know, I have an alt problem in just about any MMO I play long-term. This includes FFXIV, even though most folks will tell you that alts are not only not required, but fairly useless (aside from giving yourself more work to do in the game).
Even so, I have a full 8 characters on my main server, Mateus. And… I think… I’m down to 7 on my over-flow server, Coeurl. It might be 8, though. I’ve lost count.
I do want to assure you that this is a post about alts and not about mains. Back in November of last year, I finally buckled and gave Amon my main character slot.
There were a number of reasons for this, listed in that blog post, and I can say that I’ve happily re-claimed almost everything for Amon that I had before… aside from the Allagan Skyslipper. Attempts at soloing and duoing E4S have been made without success… but maybe next expansion. I can be patient.

So, yes. This post isn’t about me changing my main again. I think I’m happy with the choice I made almost a year ago! Hopefully.
A Coveted Alt Character Slot
However, that left me with another situation. The character slot that was once Amon is my second-most progressed slot on my account. Meaning, I’ve unlocked the second-most content, mounts, minions, mogstore purchases, glams, jobs, gear… and it’s a full omini-crafter and omini-gatherer.
So, whomever inherited this slot would be quite an advanced character, though not as advanced as my Main. This means that I’ve juggled this slot indecisively between alt identities for many months.
In the duration of that time, due to the fact that this character slot had quite a number of fantasias stashed away (I not used a fantasia on Amon), this character slot became:
- Tad’s Daughter, Evanthe
- A version of Dancing Green
- Kip Bun
- My Aywren Cat
- Kip Bun Again
Do note that I gave up the Dancing Green idea on Mateus because I wasn’t able to secure the actual name “Dancing Green” – but I have been able to do so on Coeurl instead. Evanthe, likewise, now exists on Coeurl, too, as I consolidated all of my extra alts there – some which were in limbo on the Dynamis server for a while.
I later turned this alt into my Aywren character when I started my YouTube channel – she was meant to be the face of the account there and on my other socials. However, I decided to change the alt back into Kip a few weeks ago when I saw the teaser for Runesmith in the 7.56 patch – this character slot would allow me to roll a Runesmith immediately upon Evercold’s release, and I think it could be a good match for Kip.

And, thus, Kip Bun has returned to the alt lineup.
But I still needed/wanted an Aywren character, so I repurposed my Fljot bun one last time. I was having fun leveling her Picto last year, but I haven’t done so in a while. So maybe that gives me a little project to pick up for Aywren now. Picto works for her, too!
I’m not sure for whom, but I apparently picked up the Zero hairstyle on this character slot in the past. I thought it looked cute, and it felt like a nice change of pace for my cat.
Finding that Balance
At this point, I feel like I have a good balance between my Sygnus and Spot of Mummery characters on the Mateus server. I always put more weight and time into my Mateus characters, and feel like it’s where my most important characters should live.
My Sygnus stories have 3 characters represented (Ben, Tai, Kip), and the Spot of Mummery cast has 4 (Amon, Tad, Koh, and Zuri). Then I have my Me-Character-Cat on the side to round it out. Of all of these characters, only Koh and Aywren aren’t at the 7.56 MSQ – my alts still need to do the patch. I’ve just been too lazy to get around to it.

Next expansion, however, I’m not sure if I’m going to push to level everyone through MSQ again or not. This might be the expansion where I take a break and just focus one or two characters to take beyond level 100.
It’s really a lot of time and work to keep pushing all the alts through, even if they are super useful when it comes to things like crafting and gathering scrips at max level. It also depends on how fun the expansion is, and how draining leveling through it will be.
For now, I’m just going to relax with my alts and try to find a balance where I enjoy playing FFXIV again. I’m not sure that what I’ve been feeling lately could be considered “burn out” or not, but I know I haven’t been logging in nearly as much as I could be, aside from running Frontlines (working on the Series mount), practicing healing in Alliance raids, and working on subs/crafting projects. I finished up Beastmaster pretty quickly, and running Crucible weekly is sorta meh to me.
I’d love to be hyped up for Evercold! Maybe whatever we see at the Japan Fan Fest in a few weeks will help with that(?) Fingers crossed!
