Guild Wars – Afterlife Announced

Posted on November 4, 2026 by Aywren

This is a post about Guild Wars 1 (not GW2), which is one of my favorite old-skool MMOs ever. Yesterday, a game that hasn’t seen an expansion almost 20 years announced a new DLC called Afterlife to be released on January 13, 2027, and I’m super stoked to hear it!

I’m not sure if the content type caters to me or not, but just the idea that one of my old flames is burning again brings me bliss. I always felt that ANet dropped GW1 way too suddenly after announcing the development of GW2 way too early.

So, last year, when we saw a revival of GW1 in Reforged, I was quite pleased. Sadly, with everything that was going on in my life, I wasn’t able to jump in and enjoy Reforged like I would have liked (I considered rolling up a new character, and still might). But it seems that the response to this must have been enough to trigger development of completely new content.

Here’s what we can look forward to with this DLC:

• Skill-Drafting Combat: Build a custom skill bar unique to each run, utilizing abilities from any profession for boundless replayability.
• New Dynamic Dungeon: Explore jungles, cenotes, and floating ruins in an ever-changing dungeon format.
• All-New Story: Uncover the history of Xotecha deep within the Mists, where memories and dreams bleed into reality.
• Unlock New Rewards: Play with your existing characters to collect rewards that impact future dungeon runs and permanent rewards that you can enjoy outside of Xotecha.
• New Allies and New Foes: Encounter Ancient Golems, battle powerful Nightmares, and uncover the secrets of the Cult of Odran.
• Play with Friends: Embark on dungeon runs with your friends or with henchmen.

If you preorder before the release date, you’ll also get a nice discount on the price ($23.99 vs $29.99) and the Vestments of the Order costume.

Here’s the short announcement trailer:

Between GW1 Afterlife and FFXIV Evercold, there’s going to be quite a bit of MMO expansion to play for me in 2027!
